TL;DR

After five months of compressed litigation and 211 docket entries, the court ruled from the bench on the first day of trial that the ten defendants represented by LawMay owed no damages at all.

Overview

At five o'clock in the afternoon on April 20, 2026 (U.S. Eastern Time), an 85-year-old federal judge announced from the bench that the ten defendants represented by LawMay bore no liability for damages to the plaintiff. Against a damages claim in the millions of dollars, the court entered a zero-damages ruling. Five months of contested litigation in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida came to a close.

Background and Procedural History

This was a copyright infringement action. The plaintiff filed suit in November 2025.

From filing, the case moved quickly. By the time of the final hearing on April 20, 2026, the docket had reached 211 entries, with nine attorneys appearing for the parties.

When LawMay took the matter, it faced a temporary restraining order already in effect and an asset freeze approaching one million dollars.

With funds frozen on that scale, the defendants were under continuing operational pressure. The court compressed a copyright action that would ordinarily take eighteen months or longer into five months.

Contested on Multiple Fronts

The parties engaged simultaneously on several fronts. Between filing and trial the docket reached 211 entries, of which dozens of motions, oppositions, and replies concerned the scope of the injunction, the asset freeze, and the manner of enforcement alone.

Beyond the injunction disputes, the parties also contested:

  • discovery
  • case management
  • the handling of counterclaims
  • pretrial procedure
  • an intensive evidentiary phase

During discovery the exchanges intensified further. The parties filed successive rounds of motions, oppositions, supplemental submissions, and status reports concerning written discovery obligations, the scope of production, and the sufficiency of responses, proceeding through multiple hearings and under the court's direction.

These filings were not only numerous but spanned the application of the evidentiary rules, cost allocation, and the scheduling of subsequent proceedings.

A Surge of Pretrial Filings

At the pretrial stage the exchanges again came to a head. Within a short period the parties filed exhibit lists, witness lists, and proposed findings of fact and conclusions of law, and brought several motions in limine on admissibility.

Motions, oppositions, and replies were completed within days, so that the issues were tightly framed by the time the case reached trial.

Trial and the Ruling

The case was set for a two-day trial.

Day One

The first day ran more than seven hours. Several witnesses testified and were examined on the alleged infringement, sales figures, and the calculation of damages. Both sides completed their principal presentations within the time available, and the pace remained tight throughout.

A Ruling From the Bench

That afternoon, before the trial reached its second day, the judge announced from the bench that the second day would be canceled and ruled that the defendants bore no liability for damages.

The plaintiff's multimillion-dollar damages claim was rejected in its entirety before the close of the first day of trial. After contested injunction practice, discovery, and pretrial proceedings, the case concluded with a zero-damages result.
